Obstáculos al desarrollo: la influencia del lenguaje del Frente Nacional en El Campesino (1961)

Abstract

Objetivo: este estudio busca mostrar cómo el periódico El Campesino contribuyó a promover una idea de campesinado útil a la política del Frente Nacional en 1961. Metodología: inspirado en estudios de gramática funcional, se analizan las estructuras gramaticales del lenguaje en el periódico para entender su influencia política. Originalidad: el contexto de las ideas sobre el campesinado puede ayudar a entender las razones de su adopción en políticas de desarrollo fallidas. Este artículo polemiza con estudios que describen a El Campesino como un periódico crítico de las políticas gubernamentales. Conclusiones: El Campesino creó un lenguaje sintonizado con el Frente Nacional que promovió la idea de los campesinos como obstáculos al desarrollo. En este lenguaje, el control del campesinado era necesario para impedir la expansión del comunismo. Tal control debía ocurrir por medio de una alianza entre el Frente Nacional, la Iglesia católica y las políticas para América Latina de los Estados Unidos. El periódico contribuyó así a frenar una reforma agraria desde el Estado y favoreció la tesis del mercado como único orientador del desarrollo.
