In Reply.— The National Institutes of Health have recognized the need for randomized controlled clinical trials to validate the safety and efficacy of neonatal therapies, and it was specifically for this purpose that the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development initiated a Neonatal Intensive Care Network to conduct multicenter studies of therapeutic interventions. The Generic Database reported in our publication was developed specifically to provide baseline information for planning randomized clinical trials for very low birth weight infants, as noted in our publication.1,p588
