The report on teenage suicide by the Committee on Adolescents (Pediatrics 66:144, 1980) was timely and worthwhile. We question their conclusions concerning prevention of adolescent suicide and management of those who have attempted suicide. Successful suicide by adults is almost always associated with a readily diagnosed condition: depressive illness, alcoholism, dementia, schizophrenia, or antisocial personality.1,2 Unfortunately it is not yet clear which disorders in children or adolescents are likely to lead to suicide, although Shaffer3 has reported a strong association with conduct disorder.
