Clonidine (Catapres, Boehringer Ingelheim) is a relatively new hypotensive agent with complex pharmacologic actions on the autonomic nervous system. Little is known about its effects and side effects in children. An interesting combination of these were seen in a child who accidentally ingested an unknown quantity of this drug. Noteworthy was the lack of its main action and exaggeration of side effects in this child. Experience with hypertensive adults has shown it to be an effective hypotensive agent with relatively mild side effects. Drowsiness and dryness of the mouth due to decreased salivation have been common. Transient sodium retention and weight gain occur.
