Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia

Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia

Abstract

I read with interest the obervations of Dr. Milby and his co-workers (Pediatrics 43:601, 1969) regarding seasonal variations in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. The differences between the two hospitals in the yearly fluctuation of the bilirubin levels is intriguing and raises a question about possible etiology which might bear consideration. Several recent reports have emphasized the effect of light on the degradation of bilirubin. Is there a possibility tha the two hospital nurseries differed in the amount of light to which the infants were exposed?
