Abstract As in other European regions, in the last ten years the term ditched enclosure has become familiar in studies about Iberian Late Prehistory. The present paper critially reviews the limited and imprecise impact that this concept has had in the scientific literature on the Neolithic and the Copper Age in our region. Contrary to what it would be expected, the new term, which has turned the 'settlements fortified with ditches' into 'settlements monumentalised using ditches', has in fact served to disable the innovative and groundbreaking proposal that characterised the original concept. The terminological shift has not entailed the true interpretative turn that the new term initially implied; therefore, our perception of the past remains basically the same. Change has only meant that things stay the same. In this context and as an alternative, our view put the emphasis on the political and monumental nature of these sites as opposed to the traditional idea of them as sedentary settlements. Keywords: Neolithic, Chalcolithic, settlement patterns, structured deposition, pit sites, ditched enclosures.
