El declive del contrabando de indocumentados en México

Abstract

El fortalecimiento de la política de control fronterizo durante las últimas dos décadas ha generado un incremento en la demanda de los servicios que prestan los polleros y ha hecho que sus tarifas suban. Está muy extendida la idea de que el incremento de las tarifas ha provocado que las redes de contrabandistas de indocumentados se hayan vuelto más sofisticadas, mejor organizadas y más rentables; de modo que los polleros que operaban a pequeña escala han sido desbancados por organizaciones criminales vinculadas a los cárteles de la droga que muestran un desprecio total por las vidas humanas. El presente artículo cuestiona estos planteamientos y concluye que el coyotaje ha dejado de ser rentable porque las redes de contrabando de indocumentados tienen que pagar elevadas cuotas por atravesar corredores controlados por los grupos delictivos, y el número de migrantes dispuestos a cruzar a los Estados Unidos ha disminuido debido a la violencia.
