The following editorial was prepared by Dr. Charles C. Hughes, Immediate Past President of the Society for Medical Anthropology. In it, Dr. Hughes summarizes the discussion to date surrounding the proposed reorganization of the American Anthropological Association, and the ways in which this reorganization will affect the Society. Readers are encouraged to respond to the points made here, and to submit their opinions and viewpoints for publication in the Letters to the Editor section of the Quarterly. Letters should not exceed 500 words, and should be double‐spaced and typewritten. Both the SMA Executive Committee and the Editors encourage such submissions in an effort to continue the dialogue on the proposed reorganization plan begun at the Society's annual business meeting in December 1982.
