A Conservation Case Study of Persian Miniatures

Abstract

Les miniatures persanes sont un facteur important dans l'histoire et la culture de la Perse. Le developpement des livres d'art et de la peinture de miniatures a commence au 12 e siecle et a emprunte de nombreux elements a d'autres cultures de la region. Les souverains au pouvoir, schahs et sultans, ont joue le role de genereux mecenes pour les artistes et peintres miniaturistes. Ils fonderent des ecoles qui ont transmis cet art et cet artisanat du livre pratiques dans de nombreux ateliers. Le Shāhnāmeh est une des realisations les plus brillantes de l'art miniaturiste perse sur le plan de la forme et des couleurs. L'etude presentee ici donne tout d'abord un apercu sur la technique de fabrication et sur le materiau employe pour les miniatures. Ensuite nous verrons en detail la conservation d'un exemplaire du Shāhnāmeh datant du 17 e siecle et provenant du departement des Livres rares et Collections speciales de la Bibliotheque universitaire de Princeton. Suivra une description des mesures adoptees concernant un objet tres altere lors de sa decouverte et alors considere comme inutilisable. Cet objet recele des couleurs et des encres extremement solubles dont tout traitement semble etre temeraire. Il s'est agi d'eliminer les traces de reparations anterieures pratiquees sous la forme d'ajouts massifs de papier-parchemin a l'aide d'applications locales aqueuses. Le papier endommage sous la couleur a base de cuivre a ete consolide avec du papier Japon, on a utilise du Klucel G dans de l'ethanol pur comme colle.
