Disruptions in Ottoman Empire started with the independence demands of Greeks following the Serbian rebellion which was supported by the foreign countries. The war between Ottoman Empire and Russia became inevitable due to the destruction of the Ottoman fleet in Navarino as well as Russia neglecting its responsibilities. Mahmud II., who had dismissed Janissary Guild and formed a new army called Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye (The Mansure Army) organisation, was defeated in the battle thus Edirne treaty was signed. This article explores the cause and effects of this treaty which was an important turning point for Ottoman Empire and its politics.
