Abstract

Marjorie Garber inspiziert in ihrer ebenso eloquenten wie materialreichen Abhandlung die abendländische Geistes- und Kulturgeschichte von der Antike bis zur Postmoderne und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass Bisexualität allgegenwärtig und zugleich kulturell und politisch unsichtbar ist. Die zahlreichen Beispiele bisexuellen Begehrens, die sich sowohl unter literarischen Figuren als auch bei bekannten historischen Personen finden lassen, seien von ihren Interpret/-innen stets der Dichotomie Homo- oder Heterosexualität unterworfen worden. Erfahrungen, die dieser binären Opposition widersprechen, würden als „Phase“, „Experiment“, „Verirrung“, „Selbstbetrug“ usw. abgewertet. Im Sinne postmoderner Identitätskritik plädiert die Autorin für eine Befreiung der Erotik von solchen Normierungen und preist das subversive und transgressive Potential menschlicher Sexualität jenseits der Kategorien homo- hetero- oder bisexuell.
