Abstract

Im Südafrika der 1950er-Jahre kam jede neue Ausgabe des Magazins »Drum« dem Öffnen eines Fensters zu einer anderen Welt gleich. Visuelle Repräsentationen vom urbanen Leben der Bevölkerungsmehrheit, von Kunst und Kultur, panafrikanischer Politik, aber auch von den Missständen in Südafrika waren in der offiziellen Bildwelt der 1950er-Jahre eine Sensation. Die 1951, drei Jahre nach Einführung der Apartheid als offizieller Regierungspolitik, zum ersten Mal erschienene englischsprachige Zeitschrift war daher revolutionär. Peter Magubane, einer der Fotojournalisten von »Drum«, bezeichnete die Redaktionsstube im Rückblick als eine Art Heterotopie innerhalb des segregierten Stadtraums: »›Drum‹ war eine andere Art von Zuhause, hier gab es keine Apartheid.«
