Polityka religijna i tolerancja w państwie Turków Osmańskich w literaturze francuskiego Oświecenia

Abstract

Artykuł dotyczy obrazu polityki religijnej Imperium Osmańskiego w literaturze francuskiego Oświecenia. Autor analizuje sposób, w jaki osiemnastowieczni myśliciele francuscy przedstawiali turecki despotyzm i tolerancję religijną wobec chrześcijan. Temat pracy wpisuje się w badania nad stereotypami dotyczącymi Orientu i nad rozwojem idei tolerancji w Europie nowożytnej. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie, jak francuscy filozofowie i publicyści wykorzystywali obraz Turcji Osmańskiej w debacie o tolerancji religijnej we Francji. Autor stosuje metodę analizy historyczno-literackiej, odwołując się przede wszystkim do pism Monteskiusza i Woltera. W pracy wykazano, że mimo utrwalonego stereotypu Turcji jako państwa despotycznego i zacofanego, część myślicieli francuskich dostrzegała w polityce osmańskiej przykład praktycznej tolerancji religijnej, zwłaszcza w porównaniu z europejskimi konfliktami wyznaniowymi. Autor podkreśla, że Wolter traktował ten wątek jako argument w sporze przeciwko nietolerancji religijnej we Francji. Rezultaty analizy wskazują, że obraz Turcji w literaturze Oświecenia był ambiwalentny: łączył krytykę despotyzmu z uznaniem dla względnej tolerancji religijnej Osmanów.
