Abstract

In the last decades, studies by an increasing number of social psychologists and neuroscientists have found that a vision of the Self as autonomous and independent is most pervasive in the Euro-North American areas, while the Self as interdependent is evident in the Asian ones. The analysis of narrative production in the form of life narratives and autobiographical stories is an essential tool that can confirm the presence of different narrative patterns in the West (i.e., in Euro-North American areas), and in the East (namely China and Japan). Narratology, therefore, provides valid evidence to support the existence of both an autonomous, independent and self-centered Western Self, which reflects the basic values of the European and North American societies, and an interdependent Eastern Self, interested in social relationships and relational interaction that embodies the attitudes promoted in the eastern parts of the world.
