Gangster Melodrama

Abstract

Der Gangster, prominente Reflexionsfigur der amerikanischen Populärkultur des 20. Jahrhunderts, steckt nicht erst seit »The Sopranos« in der Krise. In dieser erfolgreichen HBO-Fernsehserie geht die hypervirile Männerfigur in die Therapie und erfährt dadurch, so jedenfalls die Sopranos Studies, eine weiblich konnotierte Umschrift. Asokan Nirmalarajah argumentiert jedoch, dass diese Serienprämisse einen Blick auf die bereits grundlegend »melodramatischen« Sinnstrukturen des Gangsterfilms erschließt. Er (re-)perspektiviert den Gangster als eine kulturhistorisch wichtige Opfer- und Krisenfigur mittels einer Lektüre der TV-Serie und des Filmgenres als »Male«, »Family« und »Immigrant Melodrama«.
