Building codes allow the use of bundled reinforcement in groups of up to four bars. Placing reinforcing bars in bundles can overcome some of the practical limitations of using single bars with larger diameters. This paper examines the behavior of tension lap splices of bundled bars in cracked concrete under flexural loads. Using 16 beam specimens, splices of two-, three-, and four-bar bundles were compared with splices of single bars with the same cross-sectional area. Results showed that splices of bundled bars had the same strength as splices of single bars with the same total bar area, regardless of the number of bars in the bundle. Specimens in which entire bundles were spliced had the same performance as equivalent single-bar specimens. The effect of development length and confinement was the same for all specimens. These findings indicate that bundles of bars can be treated as single units and that entire bundles can be lap spliced.
