Reliability Associated With Safety Factors of ACI 318-89 and the Mexico City Concrete Design Regulations

Abstract

The current versions of the ACI Building Code (ACI 318-89) and Mexico City design regulations on reinforced concrete use the load and resistance factor design approach. Compatibility and consistency between the relaibilitity indexes associated with flexure, compression plus bending of unconfined short columns, and shear and torsion limit states are reviewed for each code. The reliability indexes beta for different structural cross-sectional properties are calcualted. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is used, and, for one case, the first-order second-moment method is also included in the analysis. In all cases, the statistical characteristics assumed for materials and geometric propterties, as well as for quality control, are typical of Mexican constructions. Results show some inconsistencies in ACI 318-89 code reliabilities. No incompatibilities were found for the Mexican Code.
