Abstract

La zona de estudio considerada en este trabajo corresponde al área del Geoparque Mundial UNESCO Mixteca Alta (GMUMA), que comprende la extensión territorial de nueve municipios ubicados en el noroeste del estado de Oaxaca: San Andrés Sinaxtla, San Bartolo Soyaltepec, San Juan Teposcolula, San Juan Yucuita, San Pedro Topiltepec, Santa María Chachoapam, Santiago Tillo, Santo Domingo Tonaltepec y Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán, que abarcan una superficie total de 415.4 km2 (Palacio et al., 2015). Se trata de un área comúnmente considerada como un “desastre ecológico” dada la avanzada degradación de sus recursos naturales; sin embargo, es precisamente esa condición la que representa su principal atributo de interés, con formas del relieve y procesos asociados que se manifiestan como rasgos erosivos y acumulativos que, a su vez, se relacionan con el uso milenario del terreno con fines agrícolas, que lo convirtien en un recurso didáctico y turístico susceptible de ser aprovechado desde la perspectiva del geoturismo (Palacio et al., 2016).
