The steady state, harmonic behaviour of the capstan mechanism when used as a harmonic force amplifier was investigated. The investigation was carried out analytically; by numerical simulation; and experimentally over the range 0 to 4 kHz, spanning the low and high frequency regimes of operation of the belt amplifiers tested. It was found that the analytical solution and the numerical simulation were consistent with each other, and the experimental results were consistent with the analytical predictions for the belt amplifiers under study.
