The Synagogue has always been a communal institutional organism. In Hebrew, the Synagogue is known by three names : BET HA' TIFHLAH, "House of Prayer" , BET HA* MIDRASH, "House of Study", BEP HA’ KENESSET, "House of Assembly". These are the functions for which the Synagogue building is utilized. It is a "House of God". Nevertheless, it is the place where the Jews assembled, not only for prayer, but, from its earliest times, to study the TORAH, the "Five Books of Moses" and to meet socially. Ritual, symbolism, and sociability have always had their place in the Jewish Religion and way of life, and this is reflected in the Synagogue.
