The use of Recycled Aggregate in new Concrete

Abstract

This research paper is a literature analysis that considers the utilization of waste concrete and its potential applications in Australia. However, the purpose of this report is not to determine that if RC Aggregates can totally replace natural aggregates for all concrete applications but is it to identify applications where aggregates qualities are not as essential to it (i.e. road base, drainage aggregates and certain non-structural applications), because at the present moment although there are numerous publications in relation to the use of RC Aggregates and RA Concrete, there are no concise data sources available. Nevertheless, before going into the existing and potential applications of this resource background knowledge into the subject is require to understanding the feasibility.The areas considered are:.. The life cycle of concrete in particular an embodied energy comparison between RC Aggregates and natural aggregates... The production process of RC aggregates... Technological characteristics between natural aggregates and RC Aggregates... The mechanical and physical properties of RA Concrete... Applications of RC Aggregates... Potential application of RA ConcreteThe conclusion research was that the use of RC Aggregates and RA Concrete is both environmental friendly and economically feasibility. Although, physically the RC Aggregates and RA Concrete is a little bit inferior than natural aggregate concrete but with more research and development quality of this demolition waste will surely improve. It has also been concluded that in order improve the attractiveness of RC Aggregates and RA Concrete, government intervention is require both federally and locally. The government need to increasing funding for research and development to improve RC Aggregate in turn improving the RA Concrete properties, educate the consumers in the benefits of recycling and finally create a widen the specifications to include recycled material. There is no reason why in the future that this recycled resource cannot be employed structurally.
