The use of recycled aggregate has become a necessity for some countries due to the environmental and economical burden of dumping waste material. Recycled aggregate can be used in many ways, most commonly as base in road construction. The use of recycled aggregate in new concrete has been investigated and is currently being used for applications ranging from bike paths to large buildings. The aim of this project is to review relevant literature on the topic of recycled aggregate (particularly RCA) so as to gain a better understanding of the properties that they exhibit. It is also the intention of this report to examine the uses of recycled aggregate, in particular its use as aggregate in new concrete and the properties of such concrete. This report hopes to show that concrete made from recycled aggregate has a comparative strength to that made with natural aggregates. It is also the objective of this report to review the ways different countries are increasing recycling of construction waste and its use.The final goal of this report is to review the economical and environmental cost of recycled aggregate in the hope of finding it as a viable solution for the use of construction debris. The properties of recycled aggregate were shown to be comparable to natural aggregate, although it was shown that RCA had a lower relative density and higher water absorption. This concluded to be due to the cement paste attached to the RCA from the old concrete. The properties of fresh aggregate concrete were shown to be similar to that of concrete made from natural aggregate when mixes were altered with extra additives. The amount and type of additive differed between researchers and it was recommended that more studies be conducted on the effects of additives on fresh concrete made with recycled aggregate....
