With an increasing popularity in the use of Cold Formed Steel Sections in residential constructions, it is of great interest to many researchers and academics to investigate on the current design and construction methods of these sections. Presently, it is believed that Cold Formed Steel trusses are modelled, designed and constructed as fully hinged setups. This has created much controversy regarding the safety of these structures. Full-computerised strength analyses were carried out on semi-hinged truss setups to observe on the bending effect of these trusses and effectively evaluate the safety of current design and construction methods. Moreover, full-computerised stability analyses were also performed to gain a clearer understanding of the buckling behaviour of current BHP cross sections under pure axial loads and determine their effectiveness under given loads. Schafer’s Direct Strength Method was used with this analysis. The results of this study indicated that the bending effect is a crucial factor in the design of these truss models. The outcome of this investigation also demonstrated that the axial capacity of current BHP Supra Truss may be reduced to meet the economical requirements of design while the capacity of the BHP C Section should be increased to improve its global buckling capacity.
