The suburban shopping centre can be seen to be a place of great significance and influence. Originally developed not with environmental intentions but with pure financial objectives, it has evolved into a place which performs a pivotal role within a consumerist society. As a site of consumption it is inextricably linked to television, marketing and popular culture. It both facilitates consumers 'needs' and, influences and informs consumer's lifestyles. With the beginning of the 21st century, issues pertaining to the environment and its conservation have become ever present in the media and government policy. Issues of sustainability have infiltrated television and popular culture and are acknowledged by the corporate sector and by the consumer. With this development the retail sector or more specifically shopping centres are undergoing change, towards sustainable development. This thesis examines the shopping centre and its progression towards sustainable development. It focuses on the importance of the development of the Green Star Shopping Centre Pilot Scheme, which rates a shopping centre's environmental performance. These issues are then discussed in relation to the Orion Town Centre at Springfield which seeks to be the first '6 star Green Star' retail development in Australia and a 'World Leader' in sustainable design.
