Surface enamel was found to have a high lead content. It was conjectured that a source of this element might be the dentifrice and, thus, a number of commonly used dentifrices were analyzed for lead. Lead was detected in all the samples examined. In some brands, significant quantities of lead were detected in the toothpaste immediately adjacent to the container walls. In these samples, high concentrations of lead also were detected in toothpaste squeezed from almost-empty containers. These results suggest that containers are a source of lead in dentifrice.
