Abstract

[ES] El SM y las EP están emergiendo en el mundo como un problema de salud pública. Ambas patologías tan prevalentes pueden dar lugar a complicaciones importantes y su conjunción puede favorecer el empeoramiento de cada una de ellas. Según la definición de la NCEP/ATPIII, el SM se trata de la combinación de varias anomalías clínicas, que pueden ser: la obesidad, la hiperglucemia, la HTA, la hipertrigliceridemia, la DA y el aumento del perímetro abdominal. Por este motivo, Canarias ocupa el primer lugar de España en pacientes afectados, ya que su población tiene la mayor prevalencia en obesidad, es la primera en mortalidad por DM y una HTA que ronda casi el 50% de la población. De esta forma, dependiendo de cuáles sean los criterios, o incluso el número de ellos, que conforme el SM, los biomarcadores proinflamatorios que facilitan la aparición de las enfermedades periodontales pueden estar exacerbados, facilitando y contribuyendo en la degradación del soporte periodontal.
