Abstract

El artículo propone una revisión de la transición y primeras décadas de existencia de la Comunidad Autónoma de Canarias, centrándose en el rol jugado por los tradicionales grupos de poder de las islas de Tenerife y Gran Canaria, enfrentados acérrimamente por la hegemonía regional desde principios del siglo xix. El análisis constata la posición central que ocuparon estos grupos durante los años que antecedieron y sucedieron el nacimiento de la autonomía, concibiéndose, desde un plano más innovador, el conjunto de acciones políticas desarrollado por tales élites como una contramovilización. Para ello, el artículo identifica y se ocupa de hasta cuatro dinámicas surgidas con la transición que amenazaban con trastocar el statu quo de las islas, analizando, a continuación, algunas de las reacciones desplegadas por las élites en conflicto, alentadas, en gran parte, por el estado de alarma en que se habían posicionado frente a tales dinámicas. En base a esta perspectiva novedosa, la formación política Coalición Canaria se presenta como el producto más importante de la contramovilización a examen, erigiéndose en un instrumento eficaz que ha tenido la capacidad de moldear el orden político del archipiélago, en gran parte, según la voluntad de aquellas élites.
