Abstract

La expresión «notre sainte princesse» se registra en textos que habían escrito las religiosas de algunos conventos de Flandes poco después de la muerte de Isabel Clara Eugenia. Estos manuscritos recogían la representación y la imagen que estas religiosas habían ido construyendo de quien fuera su soberana y gobernadora antes, en el transcurso de su vida. Ese enunciado −«notre sainte princesse»− contiene tres dimensiones fundamentales en la configuración de la imagen y la comprensión histórica de Isabel Clara Eugenia que son las que van a constituir el objetivo del trabajo. Están aludidas en ese enunciado dos nociones poderosas −reginalidad y santidad− y se añade un interesante sentido de pertenencia o de apropiación («nuestra»). Nos interesa el estudio de ese entramado como tal y pretendemos analizar cómo se trenzaron históricamente las tres realidades y mostrar también cómo la propia infanta se implicó de forma activa y trabajó en la configuración y elaboración de esa imagen de sí misma como gobernante «digna de veneración», muy especialmente tras su viudedad y en una atmósfera de exaltación de la santidad. Es posible ver cómo hagiografía y vida formaron históricamente parte de una misma realidad. Combinamos el estudio de documentación y textos escritos elaborados desde los conventos femeninos acerca de quien fuera soberana en Flandes, Isabel Clara Eugenia, con el análisis de otras iniciativas de la propia infanta y otras operaciones que ella puso en marcha. Nuestro trabajo pretende contribuir a la incorporación de la noción de reginalidad a los marcos interpretativos que están guiando los estudios sobre las soberanas en la Edad Moderna.
