Abstract

Face à proclamação da morte de Deus por Nietzsche, em 1883, falar da morte da novela parece insignificante. Ou da morte da tragédia, o título de um dos ensaios de George Steiner. Ou da morte do autor, sentenciada em 1968 por Roland Barthes. Como suma de tantas mortes, Alvin Keman publicava em 1990 o seu livro The Death of Literature. O que está em jogo é algo fundamental: a sobrevivência da literatura como linguagem para além das restrições do espaço e do calendário; como a palavra essencial no tempo que conjurava o poeta António Machado. Esta dimensão de perpetuidade é inerente ao literário porque conforma a própria textura do discurso, a sua literariedade, ao programá-lo, condensá-lo e trabalhá-lo como uma mensagem intangível, enunciada fora da situação mas aberta a que qualquer leitor, em qualquer época, projete sobre o texto a sua própria e a assuma como uma revelação do próprio eu. Uma escrita concebida a partir da aceitação da sua caducidade por parte do seu criador, uma escrita “fungível”, deixaria imediatamente de ser literária, para se converter em algo completamente diferente, em pasto de uma cultura do lazer servida por uma poderosa máquina industrial. O risco reside, portanto, em suplantar a literatura com algo que não seja um remédio de si própria, embora conte com o contributo dos que um dia foram escritores e agora são apenas operários de uma ingente fábrica cultural de Tecnopolis.
