Lo spazio atlantico da Alessandro a Cesare

Abstract

Come i Greci, in età arcaica, arrivano a Gibilterra ribattendo rotte fenice, cosi i medesimi Greci, e quindi i Romani, in età ellenistica, penetrano i segreti dello spazio atlantico avventurandosi su rotte poste da sempre sotto il ferreo e geloso controllo di Cartagine. Connessi alle rotte marine e alle vie terrestri che conducono all’Atlantico o alle sue coste settentrionali, Ercole e Ulisse sono i pionieri dell’acquisizione di nuovi orizzonti geografici in epoca ellenistica : emblemi o contrassegni della conquista territoriale in età romana. Da Alessandro a Cesare lo spazio atlantico meglio si definisce, si sottrae al monopolio punico, si iscrive in una nuova geografia di conquista, si insinua – tramite il riciclaggio di vecchie e rassicuranti leggende – nell’immaginario collettivo della cultura occidentale.
