L'epiteto ufficiale Philopatris risulta attestato nel I secolo a.C. per alcuni sovrani: Cleopatra VII d'Egitto, Archelao di Cappadocia. Nel concetto di patris occorre vedere non un riferimento all'antica patria dei sovrani ellenistici, ovvero la Macedonia, bensì il desiderio di un maggior rapporto con le nazioni in cui questi re regnavano.
