Abstract

Derrière les héritages romains, massifs et visibles, les siècles médiévaux ont pratiqué de subtils et progressifs réaménagements des façons d’habiter et de compter le temps. Moins que des évolutions linéaires, les usages chronologiques des rédacteurs d’actes en matière de désignation des jours et des ans montrent plutôt de lentes évolutions, assorties de brusques et partielles entreprises de redynamisation des systèmes antiques, où la Rome rêvée est d’ailleurs tantôt impériale tantôt apostolique et, pour faire bref, plus constantinienne que césarienne. La question des rapports du pouvoir (royal, pontifical) au temps n’est pas moins complexe et, jusqu’au XIIIe siècle, toutes les évolutions semblent hors de sa portée. Certes, il est clair que Dieu n’a plus, au XIIIe siècle, voire dès le XIIe siècle, le monopole de la maîtrise du temps : à l’instar des empereurs romains, les princes laïcs cherchent désormais à influer sur le calendrier et à s’approprier la mesure du temps, le passé et le futur. Mais davantage encore que celles de l’Église, les tentatives d’appropriation du temps par l’État des derniers siècles du Moyen Âge sont hésitantes et semées d’embûches. Ces tentatives deviennent plus rationnelles et concertées à partir du milieu du XVIe siècle, avant même la réforme du calendrier imposée par la papauté, en 1582.
