Abstract

Tra i numerosi vantaggi dei quali godettero i baroni romani, indubbiamente gli incarichi negli apparati amministrativi dello Stato della Chiesa costituirono una fonte di guadagni, di incremento del proprio prestigio, di ampliamento del proprio raggio di relazioni. Il fenomeno acquista notevoli proporzioni nel Duecento quando da un lato l’organizzazione in senso statale del Patrimonio della Chiesa richiese un personale numeroso in grado di assicurare sia gli incarichi in curia sia nelle province pontificie (rettori, vicari), dall’altro i pontefici, per di più se erano romani o laziali, affidarono gli uffici a livello provinciale agli esponenti dell’aristocrazia baronale, per lo più ai cardinali, ma anche ai laici. Rettori e legati si circondarono di parenti e collaterali, che unirono al servizio nelle curie provinciali gli incarichi podestarili nei comuni. Perciò esponenti delle famiglie Conti, Annibaldi, Colonna, Capocci, Orsini cumularono molteplici cariche ma incontrarono anche inconvenienti e rischi nell’esercizio delle funzioni.
