Abstract

In the development of his actor training, Michel Saint-Denis – nephew, pupil and heir of Jacques Copeau – assigns a crucial importance to improvi- sation and mask work, considered both as instruments to strengthen corporal expression and tools to create modern comic characters. These pedagogical practices derive from Saint-Denis’ apprenticeship (from 1921 onwards) at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier and with the Copiaus company in Burgundy.
