Abstract

This article examines a group of conjunctions consisting of a preposition followed by «ciò che» expressions («di ciò che», «in ciò che», «appresso ciò che», «secondo ciò che»), which so far have not been systematically analysed in Old Italian Syntax studies (with the notable exceptions of Schiaffini and Segre), probably because of their limited number of occurrences. Since, however, they are not exceptional forms confined in a few isolated texts, the article attempts to analyse the uses of such conjunctions and their meanings, which can be placed along a complex Syntactic and Semantic continuum. The essay also addresses the problem of the relationship of Old Italian «PREP ciò che» conjunctions with similar constructions in Latin and Old French, trying to suggest a hypothesis on their origin, and finally to propose some research perspectives on the diachronic development of Old Italian Syntax.
