Abstract

Liberali-conservatori, democratico-radicali e repubblicani perseguitati dagli Stati italiani preunitari, confluirono nell’Ottocento nelle fila degli esuli e rifugiati fino a quando, con l’unificazione nazionale, si crearono le condizioni per un ritorno in patria. Alcuni di loro, tuttavia, scelsero di stabilirsi definitivamente all’estero, non condividendo le forme in cui era avvenuta l’unificazione nazionale e non potendo riconoscere la monarchia sabauda: e il caso di Carlo Cattaneo, esule in Svizzera, e di Giuseppe Mazzini, esule in Inghilterra. Cio non toglie che a essi la storiografia attribuisca la qualita di patrioti, tra i piu grandi che l’Italia abbia avuto.
