Orazio e l'ars poetica dei primi trovatori

Abstract

The essay moves from the hypothesis that Horace’s poetry, especially the Ars Poetica, was known, studied and discussed by early troubadours. In fact, while creating their “unvoiced” poetics, they seem to consider some of the great themes the ancient auctor discusses. In particular, the essay aims at identifying the influence of the Horacian scribendi recte sapere on Rudel’s idea of bos sabers. Moreover it identifies a connection between the debate on vers entiers vs vers frag in Marcabru and Peire d’Alvernha, to the Horacian categories of simplex et unum and totum. The importance Horace gives to writing as the point of connection between aesthetics and ethics, beauty and education seems to be reflected in the discussion about lyric inspiration which can be found in a lyric by Bernart Marti in which it is possible to recognize the literal translation in Occitan (eu sembli be la cot / que non talh’ e fa.l fer talhar) of a famous Horacian principle (Ergo fungar vice cotis, acutum / reddere quae ferrum valet exors ipsa secandi). The Occitan verse argues – in opposition with William IXth - in favour of an idea of poetry which results from a formal and moral refinement, carried out in parallel.
