Este artículo examina el estado actual de la Lingüística Comparada aplicada a las diez familias lingüísticas y lenguas aisladas de Mesoamérica. La clasificación de las lenguas mesoamericanas está bien establecida y también está avanzada la reconstrucción de las protolenguas. Se evalúan algunas propuestas de relación genética distante que implican a lenguas de Mesoamérica. Se establecen y discuten las tareas pendientes, junto con las recomendaciones para futuras investigaciones.
