A Paradigm of Autonomy: The Hong Kong and Macau SARs

Abstract

Hong Kong and Macau have become in their retrun to Mainland China Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China. Their creation is based on the policy One Country, Two Systems lauched by China's former reformer leader Deng Xiao Ping aiming to ease the two century-old extraterritorial European dominos in Asia, using thir capitalist-oriented model has a paradigm for China's encounter with the future. But this sucessful process has awaken fears that China will not resist to convert them to the socialist make-up heaven that looks (still)to transform its large and complex country. The 50 years of capitalist mode of life could be abruptly finished if measures are not taken to ensure and preserve the political, legal and economic autonomy of both territories.
