Abstract

A partir de ses recherches de terrain a Mombasa et sur la cote nord du Kenya, l'A. examine la maniere dont les leso, tissus utilises dans la vie quotidienne par les femmes, et sur lesquels sont inscrits des proverbes combinant art visuel et ecriture, constituent un systeme esthetique de communication interpersonnelle equivoque qui met en jeu des processus (communicatifs et semiotiques) de representation. Selon l'A., les leso constituent ainsi un genre communicatif : un moyen conventionnel repondant a certains besoins de la communaute, en l'occurence une forme d'arrangement et d'expression a l'interieur de la societe patriarchale de la cote orientale africaine. Ces tissus, associes a la femme, sont au coeur de ce genre communicatif, ou l'art verbal (les proverbes) est represente visuellement sous forme symbolique (par l'ecriture)
