Die Polychromie der etruskischen Plastik

Abstract

Polychromy research generally deals with the question of how colour changes our perception of a sculpture. For this it takes some intensive analysis. Traces of colour in Etruscan works have always been clearly visible and so far described in isolated cases. This publication is based on the visual examination and photographic documentation of more than seventy-five exemplary Etruscan objects. By this alone it gives the reader a first view on aesthetic and narrative functions of the colour setting in Etruscan sculpture. Evaluating chapters of the authors material are followed by descriptions of cross-object and cross-time contexts. Comparing studies of polychrome Greek sculpture conclude the text part. An additional catalogue illustrates the description of the objects, a table overview provides the basis for stating the painting technique of an Etruscan object in its dependence of form and time more precisely.
