Abstract

Starting from rhetorical theories of abruptness and forcefullness in style (as described in Demetrius’ treatise On Style and Longinus’ treatise On the Sublime), this paper attempts to detect some ancient antecedents (especially the effects of amousia eumousos) of the modern notions of Kitsch and rubbish.
