Abstract

No ha habido en la historia de la educación contemporánea una obra que haya tenido una repercusión más amplia y profunda que Democracy and Education: an introduction to the philosophy of education, de John Dewey, aparecida en 1916. Sus ideas fueron recogidas con entusiasmo tanto por los pedagogos del zar como por los de Lenin; tanto por los pedagogos de la República de Weimar como por algunos pedagogos del nacionalsocialismo. Fueron mayoritarias en las escuelas norteamericanas durante los años treinta del siglo pasado y cuando en estos años se pretende innovar en educación, vuelven a situarse como referente. Pero es difícil abarcar tanto sin que alguna ambigüedad inherente a la misma obra lo permita. El mismo Dewey lo reconoce indirectamente en dos obras de 1938 (Experience and Education y Logic: the Theory of Inquire) y en una de 1939 (Freedom and Culture). El hecho de que Dewey, uno de los padres indiscutidos e indiscutibles de la pedagogía moderna, someta a revisión sus propias ideas es de la mayor importancia, especialmente si lo que pone en cuestión es la concepción misma de la “experiencia educativa”. Podría ser que el pecado original de las pedagogías activas fuera la ingenua convicción de que toda experiencia que se gana la actividad del alumno es, en sí, una experiencia educativa. Parece oportuno analizar, en el centenario de Democracy and education, tanto las ambigüedades de la pedagogía de Dewey como su autocrítica.
