ANTECEDENTES, SURGIMIENTO Y DESARROLLO DE LAS COLONIAS ESCOLARES DE VACACIONES EN CANARIAS

Abstract

INTRODUCCIÓN. En el conjunto del estado español, como en Canarias, las colonias escolares de vacaciones reflejaron tanto los propósitos de mejora como los avances experimentados en materia sanitaria y educativa. Su desenvolvimiento se produjo con el apoyo de particulares, instituciones públicas y privadas, la Iglesia católica, así como la heterogénea sociedad civil. MÉTODO. Gracias al rastreo de Actas de plenos municipales, presupuestos, periódicos, informes y todo tipo de documentos, podemos conocer los antecedentes, inicios y posterior desarrollo del fenómeno, vertebrado por el ideal regeneracionista. Para el correcto desarrollo de estos aspectos,el método empleado ha sido, fundamentalmente, el descriptivo y analítico-textual. RESULTADOS. Los escolares de Gran Canaria, desde 1923, y de Tenerife, a partir de 1929, disfrutaron de los beneficios sociales, higiénicos y pedagógicos de las excursiones al monte y a la playa, los juegos, la gimnasia, los festivales culturales o las meriendas. Los lugares de destino eran siemprelos mismos: Moya, Gáldar y Playa de las Canteras, en Gran Canaria, e Icod de los Vinos y Güímar,en Tenerife. El intento de crearlas en La Palma resultó baldío. En este sentido, los resultados obtenidos son similares a los de otras zonas geográficas del estado ampliamente estudiadas. DISCUSIÓN. Las ilusiones por mantenerlas y darles continuidad no se cumplieron por los efectos del pronunciamiento militar del 18 de julio de 1936. La idea de regenerar y modernizar el país,comenzando por el cuidado de los niños, se vio superada por la fuerza de las armas.
