LA MODERNIZACIÓN DEL SISTEMA EDUCATIVO ESPAÑOL (1898-1936)

Abstract

INTRODUCCIÓN. Este artículo pretende caracterizar de manera general el proceso de modernización del sistema educativo español en el primer tercio del siglo XX. MÉTODO. Se realiza una revisión de las interpretaciones ofrecidas por la historiografía educativa española a partir de las cuestiones tenidas en cuenta por la historiografía educativa internacional para los sistemas educativos europeos y de los planteamientos genéricos sobre el periodo de la historiografía contemporánea española. RESULTADOS. Las líneas maestras del proyecto de modernización del sistema educativo español quedaron establecidas por los gobiernos de principios de siglo. No obstante, los gobiernos de la Restauración fueron incapaces de ponerlo en práctica. La Dictadura de Primo de Rivera, primero, y la Segunda República, a continuación, intentaron completar el proceso. A pesar de partir de planteamientos ideológicos opuestos, ambos regímenes abordaron con decisión la modernización del sistema educativo y paradójicamente pusieron en práctica medidas muy similares. DISCUSIÓN. El artículo subraya la coherencia del proceso modernizador español y su continuidad a lo largo de más de tres décadas y bajo tres regímenes bien diferentes. De este planteamiento se desprende la necesidad de prestar mayor atención a las reformas educativas de principios de siglo y a la política educativa de la Dictadura para obtener una visión más equilibrada del proceso.
