This article identifies some determinants of interlibrary loan turnaround time within academic libraries. Physical features of the unit, work flow, staffing patterns, and attitudes were compared to determine the relative influence of each factor on turnaround time. Although statistical tests reveal no significant differences among factors, survey data suggest that the prevailing factors affecting turnaround time are the number and location of branch libraries and the disposition of work flow. The authors conclude that, though there is no universal remedy for processing delays, local librarians may be able to reduce interlibrary loan turnaround time by careful attention to the factors presented here.
