
Many reference questions received by medical librarians, particularly, but not limited to, those relating to medical technology, can be answered by consulting the patent literature. However, many librarians are unaware of the vast amount of information to be found in patent documents and may overlook this important resource unless specifically prompted by the user. This article provides the rudimentary knowledge necessary to provide intelligent reference service to those users with patent-related questions.
