The teenage years are a difficult phase of life when many physical and emotional changes occur. Although the needs of this age group differ from those of children and adults, professionals in the hospital setting have been slow to recognize and accommodate problems which are specific to teenagers, particularly at times of illness or bereavement. This article offers some thoughts on how to help teenagers cope with loss, whether it be their own death or the death of a loved one.
