Alistair Campbell, the former press chief to Tony Blair, has recently been publicising the plight of people who suffer from a mental health problem and don’t get a fair chance in employment. He cited Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Charles Darwin, Marie Curie and Florence Nightingale as examples of famous people who succeeded despite their mental health difficulties. Campbell, who suffered a nervous breakdown many years ago, believes that it is important to highlight just how badly people like him have suffered discrimination at the hands of ignorant employers. Mental health in the workplace is a huge issue, especially nowadays with the added strain of the current economic climate. Among nurses, not only are those known to have a mental health problem at risk, but other nurses, without any recognised difficulties, are just as vulnerable.
