Distrust between the nursing and medical professions has not been helped by the latest Audit Commision report on the current state of British anaesthesia (Audit Commission, 1997). Faced with shortages of anaesthetists and problems in maintaining an adequate service, the Audit Commission has suggested that nurses, among others, should be trained to help out. This is not a new idea. Several countries in the EEC train nurses in anaesthetics.
